Main Jail Release Destinations

A populated Release Date in the Gaston County Inmate Inquiry proves that the selected Main Jail booking ended. It does not, by itself, say that the person walked into the community. Local pretrial detainees may leave on bond or a court order. County-sentenced inmates may leave after time served. Other people move to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, another custodian, or a federal placement.

The booking detail must be read with its prisoner type, booking origin, court events, and any transfer information. A county Release Date is authoritative for the end of Gaston custody. NCDAC Offender Public Information confirms a state transfer or later state release. A federal docket, a U.S. Marshals Service record, or the Bureau of Prisons Locator covers the federal side. Confirm Main Jail Releases

Main Jail Release Records

The Gaston County Sheriff operates the facility and controls the local booking record. The office does not publish dedicated release-desk hours or a fixed booking-record fee, so callers should ask about the current process and cost before requesting copies.

For a formal copy, use the Gaston County JustFOIA portal. Identify an existing entry and release summary, release or commitment order, or booking photograph. Include the person’s name as shown, subject number, booking number, booking date, release date if known, and Main Jail as the facility. A narrow request reduces mistaken identity and avoids asking the office to create a report that does not exist.

North Carolina public-record law allows inspection and copying of nonexempt records, but it does not erase confidentiality rules for medical, juvenile, sealed, expunged, or investigative material. The county retention schedule places inmate entry and release summaries in a three-years-after-release-or-transfer schedule, subject to holds. That schedule is not a promise that every field stays online for the same period.

Main Jail Custody Profile

The Sheriff’s detention description identifies the Main Jail as a county facility for male state pretrial detainees and county-sentenced inmates. It also holds federal pretrial detainees under a U.S. Marshals Service contract. Those populations produce different release records and different destinations.

The reported figures describe the facility, not daily occupancy or annual releases. A county summary reported an average daily population of 609 across the detention operation in June 2023, but that number cannot be converted into a Main Jail release count. Capacity context helps explain the size of the operation without proving how many people left on any given day.

Federal Main Jail Departures

The Main Jail’s USMS contract is a distinctive Gaston release issue. The county jail is not a federal prison, yet a federal defendant may be housed there before trial or another court event. When that person leaves the Main Jail, the Gaston booking can properly show a Release Date even though the person moved to another contract jail or continued under federal authority.

The Bureau of Prisons Locator becomes useful only if the person entered BOP custody. It generally covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward and may show a release date or a current location. It is not a complete pretrial USMS locator. For a federal pretrial movement, use the federal docket and, when needed, request an existing custody record from USMS through its FOIA process. A BOP “RELEASED” location relates to BOP custody; it does not rule out supervised release or custody in another system.

Identity must also be reconciled across systems. A Gaston booking number is not a BOP register number, and a county subject number does not become a federal identifier. Record each number with its source. Search the federal locator by register number when one is known; otherwise compare the full name, age, race, and sex fields. If no BOP result appears, do not turn the absence into proof of release. The person may still be in a pretrial USMS placement, outside BOP coverage, or recorded under data that needs correction.

Main and Annex Release Differences

Facility history helps explain why two Gaston jail records can look different. The Annex opened on May 3, 1996 and kept the work-release and weekender role. The Main Jail opened on November 1, 1999 and became the larger pretrial and county-sentence site. The distinction is more than a name change.

A Main Jail release commonly closes an ordinary pretrial or county-sentence booking. An Annex record can reflect repeated weekend processing or movement within a work-release program. Search results list both housing choices, so users must match the booking facility and read every custody interval. The booking history and court order should be read together when a person has moved between components or has several bookings.

Main Jail Release Search Fields

The inquiry accepts Name, Subject Number, Booking Number, Booking From Date, Booking To Date, and Housing Facility, plus an In Custody checkbox. The date controls filter booking dates, not release dates. A person booked before a chosen window may still have been released inside it.

Results may also show a photograph, current custody indicator, Scheduled Release Date, demographics, multiple-bookings marker, and housing facility. Open the detail even when a row appears inactive. A scheduled date remains prospective and can change. Bond information describes a legal or financial condition, not proof that staff completed physical release.

Correct Main Jail Release Records

When a portal field appears wrong, collect the booking number, the disputed field, and any court or agency document that supports the correction. The Sheriff’s disclaimer provides a written route to Jail Administrative Office, Gaston County Sheriff, P.O. Box 1578, Gastonia, NC 28053. Send the issue to the custodian, not the portal vendor.

The correction request should be precise. State what the portal displays, what record supports a change, and which booking is affected. A dated release summary, court order, or clerk-certified copy gives Jail Administration something concrete to compare. Avoid asking the Sheriff to alter a court disposition that belongs to the Clerk or a federal field controlled by USMS or BOP.

Charge and disposition copies belong with the Gaston Clerk of Superior Court. A court order can explain the legal authority for release, but the jail Release Date remains the local processing record.
