Gaston Projected vs Actual Release Dates
Three date labels can appear in the records used for Gaston County, and they are not interchangeable. Gaston Inmate Inquiry may show a Scheduled Release Date for a local booking. NCDAC Offender Public Information uses the exact label Projected Release Date for state prisoners. Both are prospective. The populated Release Date in a county booking or Actual Release Date in a completed NCDAC sentence records an event that has already occurred.
| Date | What it means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled Release Date | A prospective date displayed with a Gaston County booking when available. | That jail staff completed physical release. |
| Projected Release Date | NCDAC’s administrative projection for a state sentence. | That the projection is final or the person has left prison. |
| Release Date | The county booking-detail field documenting the end of that Gaston booking. | That the person entered the community rather than another custody. |
| Actual Release Date | The historical date attached to a completed NCDAC sentence. | That all supervision obligations also ended. |
A pretrial detainee may have no set date at all. Bond, dismissal, a court order, a detainer, or transfer can determine the next movement. A blank prospective field is not an error and should never be filled with an estimate.
How to Find a Gaston County Release Date
Begin by identifying which agency holds the person. Gaston County Jail Main and Annex bookings belong in the county inquiry. Gaston Correctional Center is a state prison, so its sentence and release information belongs in NCDAC OPI.
- For a county booking, open Gaston Inmate Inquiry, leave In Custody unchecked, and search by name, subject number, or booking number.
- Open every plausible booking. Read Booking Date, Scheduled Release Date when present, and the actual Release Date in booking history.
- For a state prisoner, use NCDAC OPI, preferably with the offender number. Otherwise narrow a name search with age or birth date.
- Open the NCDAC record and read status, admission, location, Projected Release Date, Last Movement, and Last Movement Date.
- Inspect each sentence block. Multiple sentences can have different projected and actual dates, so match the sentence to the incarceration in question.
- When the interface is unclear, ask Gaston Jail Administration about the county booking or request existing state admission/release information from NCDAC.
The county portal’s Booking From and Booking To fields filter booking dates, not release dates. An older booking can have a later release, so a tight booking-date range may hide the relevant record. The Gaston County released-inmate record guide covers the full county lookup and records-request path.
Note: Gaston’s date controls filter bookings, so always open the detail and read the actual Release Date.
North Carolina Credits in Gaston Release Dates
NCDAC calculates a Projected Release Date from the sentence structure, jail or prior credit, sentence credits, concurrent or consecutive terms, post-release rules, and later legal or disciplinary changes. Structured Sentencing generally applies to offenses committed on or after October 1, 1994 under G.S. 15A-1340.10.
The accurate statewide shorthand is not that every prisoner serves exactly 85 percent. NCDAC explains that a structured-sentence prisoner serves 100 percent of the minimum and at least 85 percent of the maximum. G.S. 15A-1340.13(d) requires service of the felony minimum. Earned time can reduce the maximum but cannot cut the term below that minimum.
G.S. 15A-1355(c) and (d) authorize NCDAC earned-time rules consistent with the felony and misdemeanor statutes. G.S. 148-13 directs the Secretary to set rates and rules for earning, forfeiting, and restoring credits, including distribution of applicable regulations to local jail administrators. For misdemeanors, G.S. 15A-1340.20 provides day-for-day service subject to authorized credits and limits combined rule-based earned time to no more than four days per month.
Gaston County does not publish a public calculation worksheet for a local pretrial booking. Even when the portal supplies a Scheduled Release Date, the Sheriff or court record is needed to understand the order behind it.
Why Gaston Release Date Records Change
A projection is a working administrative date, not a promise. NCDAC’s offender-release procedure also recognizes release paths other than sentence expiration, including court order, pardon, conditional commutation, interstate-compact release, and release of a safekeeper to a sheriff. A later event can alter the date or the destination.
| Factor | Possible effect | Best confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Earned credit | Accrual, forfeiture, restoration, or recalculation can move a state projection. | Current NCDAC OPI record and sentence block. |
| Court order or corrected credit | A judgment or later order can change the term or authorize a different movement. | Court file plus custodian record. |
| Concurrent or consecutive terms | Aggregated sentences can change which displayed date controls. | All sentence blocks and NCDAC computation. |
| Post-release supervision | The person may leave prison before the maximum while remaining under sentence supervision. | Actual Release Date and active supervision status. |
| Detainer or transfer | One custody may end while another begins. | Both custodians and the receiving system. |
| Parole action | In an eligible older case, Commission action can affect the release route. | Commission material and NCDAC movement. |
No reliable Gaston-specific or statewide rule was found that automatically moves a Sunday date to Friday. NCDAC procedure says scheduled post-release-supervision cases are released on the scheduled date, including weekends and holidays. Gaston jail practice is not published, so call Jail Administration for a particular county date.
Note: Do not move a weekend date by assumption; recheck the official record and ask the responsible custodian.
Read a Gaston State Release Record
A state record should be read as a group of fields. Inmate Status identifies the custody category. Probation/Parole/Post Release Status shows whether community supervision is active. The Most Recent Incarceration Summary carries the Projected Release Date and movement details, while each sentence block can carry its own Actual Release Date and service status.
The manifest-approved example comes from an NCDAC inactive/released record and is used to show field placement rather than to republish unnecessary personal detail.
The screenshot illustrates why one label is not enough. Strong historical confirmation combines inactive custody status, a release or expiration movement with a date, an Actual Release Date, and completed or expired service status on the relevant sentence.
For recent state-prison releases, the separate NCDAC Offender Release Search can be searched by release county, month, and year or by surname. It covers the current year plus two prior years. Its county field means release county, not conviction county, and it is not a Gaston jail release list.
Cash Award After a Gaston State Release
North Carolina law contains a narrow discharge and parole provision that is often blurred into a broad promise of “gate money.” Under G.S. 148-13(a), a state prisoner incarcerated for at least two years is provided a cash award of at least $45 upon discharge or parole. This is a state-prison provision. It does not promise money to every person leaving Gaston County Jail Main or the Annex.
The award also does not change the release-date calculation. It concerns assistance at a qualifying state discharge or parole, while the date itself remains tied to the sentence, credits, legal orders, and NCDAC process. Questions about an individual state release belong with NCDAC, not the Gaston Sheriff.
Note: The statutory cash award applies to qualifying state-prison discharges or paroles, not ordinary Gaston jail releases.
Which Gaston Release System Controls
County, state, and federal records answer different questions. Gaston Inmate Inquiry confirms the end of a Main Jail or Annex booking. NCDAC OPI confirms a Gaston Correctional Center projection, movement, actual state release, and any following community supervision. The BOP Locator supplies federal prison dates, while a USMS pretrial movement may require the federal docket or USMS records.
This distinction is local as well as procedural. Main Jail contracts for USMS federal pretrial detention, and the Annex has a BOP sentenced work-release component. A county Release Date can be correct while the person remains in federal custody. ICE’s detainee locator likewise describes current immigration custody and cannot serve as a historical release database.
Confirm a Gaston County Actual Release
Near the projected date, recheck the correct custodian’s record. After the event, look for the actual field, movement, and custody status rather than assuming the projection came true. For a county booking with no clear actual date, call the Gaston Sheriff/Jail information line at 704-869-6800 or request the entry/release summary through the county public-record portal.
NC SAVAN/VINE can provide a custody-change alert for participating Gaston jail and NCDAC records. The Gaston VINE inmate check explains the one-person search and notification steps. VINE is useful for timing, but the originating jail or NCDAC record remains the confirmation source.
Request a Gaston Release Date Record
When the county portal lacks a clear date, save the name as displayed, subject number, booking number, booking date, and facility. A narrow request can ask for the existing entry and release summary and the order that documents the release or custodial movement. Gaston County’s retention schedule identifies entry/release summaries, court commitment and release orders, work-release records, and pretrial-release agreements as inmate incarceration records.
The schedule directs destruction three years after release or transfer, subject to holds and other rules. The online inquiry has a separate moving window that the legacy official page describes as the current year plus two prior years. Neither period guarantees that every field is online for the same span, so an absent booking should lead to the records channel rather than a conclusion about custody.
No fixed Sheriff booking-record fee or turnaround was found. Ask for a fee estimate and delivery method before copies are made. If a state date is missing, use NCDAC’s public-record request for the existing state admission or release information instead of asking Gaston County to interpret a state sentence.
The Gaston Clerk of Superior Court can supply the legal trail when a court order controls the county outcome. Smart Search and Register of Actions in the statewide Odyssey Portal can show events, dispositions, judgments, and hearings. Those entries explain authority, but the jail’s Release Date still confirms that local processing ended. When the court and booking views seem inconsistent, ask both custodians about their own record instead of selecting the date that appears most favorable.
For a state sentence, use the offender number and specify the sentence or docket when requesting clarification. Basic conviction information, time served, sentence length, and admission and release dates are public categories identified by NCDAC, while many other prison records remain confidential. The narrow date question is more likely to reach the right record than a request for an agency-created sentence calculation.
Note: Request records promptly because the online booking window and the underlying retention period are separate limits.
